“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” – Warren Buffett
You are your brand. Your name is everything. You decide what your name means.
If you’re going to earn a living online, your name will come under attack. People who fly high are attacked by haters who want to clip their wings. It’s a fact of being online.
The attack may come from your business competitors, the local media, the national media, or shit sites like Gawker.
People at Gawker Media and other websites will be jealous of you. They will see that your website has a high amount of traffic and that you own your website. They work for Nick Denton, a tax evader who doesn’t even show up at the office or provide proper working conditions for his employees. You work for yourself, and Gawker Media “writers” will resent you.
They may not attack you today, but they will come for you eventually. Be prepared for war before they attack.
There are two games to play – page views and SEO.
Outrage websites play the cheap game of page views, as they rely on advertising to support their business. Create a list or a catchy title or manufacture a controversy and watch the sheep flock in. Page views mean dollars.
After Gawker writes about you, the hate mob will come on Twitter to talk to you.
You will be told you’re a piece of shit, that you deserve to die, that you should burn in an oven like the Jews during the Holocaust. You may have police called on you.
They can attack your name for a day or a week. Hate mobs, formed on outrage, find other targets. They will go away.
If you’re a cry baby, you will fold. You will cry, as Mark Cuban did, when the SJWs attacked him. If you’re living the Gorilla Mindset lifestyle, you will smirk, knowing you always have the last laugh.
If you’re a man of strength and honor, you will thank your attackers for the attention.
You will then take two long-term steps to secure your future:
- Own your name.
- Destroy the names of your enemies.
Google my name.
What comes up? There is some bullshit where people are lying about me or taking me out of context or not mentioning that I was making jokes. Oh well.
Five of the first ten search results are my websites. My information. I am pushing down the bullshit daily.
Within a year, none of the stupidity my stalkers have written will even be on Page 1 of Google.
Some Google facts.
- 33% of users click the first result for your name. Own the first result for your name.
- 90% of Google users never go past Page 1 of Google.
- Your YouTube Page will get priority in search rankings.
- Books you author on Amazon will show up high in Google search results.
That’s right. The bullshit that shows up on Page 2 of Google is largely a non-issue.
You want your name to be the first result of Google. You want your name to dominate Page 1 of Google.
I own my name.
I am my own media company, my own public relations firm, and my own marketing company.
What are other people saying about Mike Cernovich? It doesn’t matter to me. Haters will hate.
What am I saying about Mike Cernovich? Since I own my name, what I say matters far more than what any creepy internet stalker is saying.
Google Sam Biddle’s name.
Contrast my ownership of my name with Sam Biddle‘s approach. Sam Biddle is a clickbait whore who doesn’t own his own writing or his own webpage. Biddle works for Gawker and owns nothing. He is a cog in a corporate machine who can be thrown aside like a cheap page view whore.
One day he’ll show up to work and his keycard won’t get him into the office. That’s it. He’s deleted. A nobody.
As big as he’d like to think his name is, in fact his name is nothing because he doesn’t own it.
I own Sam Biddle’s name. Danger and Play shows up on Page 1 of Google for his name. If I want to, I’ll have multiple sites writing about him.
(Sam Biddle had to take a leave of absence as I gave him a nervous breakdown. As bad as Sam Biddle is, I am leaving him alone as he is fragile right now. Hopefully he will read this article, stop doing drugs, and apply the Danger & Play principles to clean up his life.)
Start a website today. Make it your name.
Update it. Just put a resume on it or share a few article you’ve been reading.
The site might not matter today or this year or even 10 years from now.
But if you’re going to be a high achiever, they will be coming to get you. They will attempt to ruin you.
Someone will write an article about you and thousands of people will Google your name.
(Over 40,000 people used Google to search for Mike Cernovich in one month alone!)
If you own your own name, you will laugh at them. Let them get their cheap page views and have a short-term thrill.
If you’re that bothered about what people are saying online, go cry in your pillow because you’re not cut out to make money online.
What if idiots read this post and go to Google to destroy me. I will laugh at them, as I am antifragile. In fact, some may suspect that this entire post is bait, written with the intent to get my haters writing about me.
But that is a topic for another day.
Own your name.
You don’t know when they will come after you, but they are coming. You don’t even have to start a website. But own a domain and be prepared to deploy it when the day comes.
